British Pound Technical Outlook: GBP/USD Short-Term Trade Levels
- GBP/USD has advanced nearly 4% from the yearly low as daily momentum strengthens to its highest reading since January.
- Four-week rally testing resistance at the May high- bulls vulnerable near-term while below.
- Price and momentum are approaching important technical thresholds that could determine whether the advance can extend into month-end.
- The medium-term technical structure remains constructive while above the yearly open

Sterling is attempting to extend its recent winning streak after yesterday's weekly opening-range break accelerated the advance to fresh three-month highs. Momentum continues to strengthen alongside the move, reinforcing the constructive medium-term technical backdrop even as the risk of near-term exhaustion begins to rise. The focus now shifts to whether buyers can absorb a potential pullback while preserving the rising trend structure needed to keep the broader advance intact. Battle lines drawn on the GBP/USD short-term technical charts.

Technical Outlook: Sterling has rallied more than 3.9% off the yearly low with the bulls now attempting to mark a fourth consecutive weekly advance. GBP/USD is trading within the confines of a proposed ascending pitchfork extending off the late-July low with the rally extending into initial resistance today at the May high near 1.3658. Looking for a reaction off this mark with the broader outlook constructive while above the yearly open.

Note that daily momentum has now reached the highest levels since January with RSI trading just below 70 ahead of the US close on Thursday. A topside breach in price alongside a push higher in momentum would be needed to fuel the next leg of the advance.

Notes: A closer look at Sterling price action shows GBP/USD breaking out of the weekly opening range yesterday with the rally exhausting into resistance today at 1.3658. Initial support now rests with the 61.8% retracement of the yearly range and the 2025 May / August highs at 1.3591/93 backed by the July high at 1.3558. Note that the median-line converges on this level early next week and a break / close below this slope would threaten a larger pullback within the multi-month uptrend. Key support / broader bullish invalidation now rests with the February low-day close (LDC) and the objective yearly open at 1.3465/74. Losses beyond this pivot zone would suggest a more significant high is in place and threaten a larger reversal in trend.
A breach higher from here exposes the yearly high-week close (HWC) and the 100% extension of the June rally at 1.3685/92 and 1.3746/49- a region defined by the 2025 high-day close (HDC) and the 2022 swing high. Note that the upper parallel converges on this region into the close of the month- look for a larger reaction there IF reached. The next major technical consideration is eyed with the yearly high-day close / swing high at 1.3848/70.
Bottom line: GBP/USD has rallied 1.8% off the monthly low with the bulls now testing resistance at three-month highs. Risk for some kickback here but the medium-term outlook remains constructive while above the yearly open. From a trading standpoint, losses should be limited to 1.3558 IF Sterling is heading higher on this stretch with a breach / close above 1.3658 needed to mark uptrend resumption.
Keep in mind we get still get the release of UK & U.S. PMI data tomorrow with key U.S. inflation data on tap next week (PCE).
