Europe goes into winter with thin cover in two markets at once, and with a single assumption doing a great deal of the work in both. European winter energy demand has been softened by a run of unusually mild seasons, which has quietly compensated for distillate supply that is tight and natural gas storage that sits below where the market would want it. Forecasters expect the mild pattern to hold. If it does not, the cushion that has absorbed Europe's supply problems disappears at exactly the point it is needed most.
Marco Saggese is Vice President of Clearing and Execution Sales at StoneX where he tracks oil market volatility, distillate supply and the margin flows that heating demand swings push through clearing clients.
Key Themes from the Discussion
The crude to diesel differential is as wide as it has ever been, letting refiners lock in profit.
Russia has banned diesel exports, closing a route Europe reopened after Middle East supply uncertainty.
European gas storage sits below expected levels, though the forward curve shows no sign of panic pricing.

Mild European Winters Have Absorbed Repeated Distillate Supply Shortfalls
"When we've seen in the past short supplies, we've been saved by the warmer winters and less demand for heating oil", Saggese says. European heating oil demand has been held down by the extremely mild winters of the last couple of years, and forecasters are treating that warmth as the new baseline rather than the exception. Because diesel and heating oil are closely linked distillate products, the same tightness that has pushed refining margins to unprecedented width would land on European heating buyers if temperatures dropped sharply. According to Saggese, the supply side of that equation already looks stretched, "in basic supply terms, we're probably looking at low supplies, but possibly not the demand that there used to be".
European Gas Storage Trails Normal Levels While Power Demand Runs Year Round
European natural gas storage is rebuilding but sits below the levels the market would normally expect entering the heating season, which leaves a second point of exposure alongside distillate. That matters more than a storage figure alone suggests, because natural gas, Saggese notes, is "not just used for heating. It's used for producing electricity. So that's a constant demand throughout the year". The forward curve is not pricing alarm, and Saggese's reading of it is that it stays "pretty flat all the way down to December", which describes a market that is uncomfortable rather than panicked. In practice that leaves European gas resting on the same weather assumption as diesel, with less room to absorb a cold winter than a rebuilding storage figure implies.
